Hey Jessica,
I'm still working on the plugin for the website so that we can create pages for each team.
We are setting up some classes through the meetup group to go over backyard farming. For now the best place to find info is the meetup.com website. We will also be posting the information here over the next few days.
Hey Jessica, I would talk to your neighbors that have empty land and others who already garden. Try to get interest in your neighborhood now. You can work out who will share property, who will tend the gardens and how you will split up the harvest. Then you can meet up and share labor, tips, and supplies in those early days.
I'm starting in Oakland now by just approaching some houses close to me that have a big fenced in yard. I think I'll try to convince them to let me farm on their property in exchange for a share of the harvest. I'll front the cost and labor of setting it up, and they won't have to mow most of their lawn anymore.
One important thing to note is that for gardens to really start producing, it's a long-term investment. So you want to let people know that you'll be in their yard a long time.
I'm hoping to start 5 or 6 small gardens in my neighborhood this year. Let me know how your ventures go!
